A Better Way to Accept Payments

29 Sep

If you’re starting a web-based venture, in most cases, you’ll be looking to accept payments from  your users one way or another. There are many payment gateways and front-end tools to help facilitate this, each with their own pricing structure. In my experience, these services are all difficult to work with and take a lot of extra digging and prodding to figure out how to use the things.

Today, a new app launched to the public, Stripe. Their pricing structure is competitive with everything else out there, but the main strength is their focus on simplicity. Within 5 minutes, you can sign up and begin accepting payments. For you developers, they have great documentation on how to implement this into your apps.

You can read more about it here: http://amazonsilk.wordpress.com/2011/09/28/introducing-amazon-silk

New TechStars Startup Accelerator Program

13 Sep

If  you’ve talked to me much at all about entrepreneurship, you’ve probably heard me mention startup accelerators such as TechStars and YCombinator. These programs take in only a handful of early-stage technology startup companies each year. They put the companies through a 2-3 month intensive mentoring program. At the end of the program, each of the companies have an opportunity to pitch a large group of investors at each programs’ “demo day”.

TechStars has announced they are starting a new program in San Antonio, TX that focuses on cloud-computing and infrastructure companies. So, if you have an idea along those lines, you should definitely check it out. A word of warning, TechStars invest heavily into the team that submits ideas, and not so much the idea itself. So make sure you apply with a creative, motivated and talented team.
